A century-old manufacturing building at the southern edge of Downtown's Industrial District is slated for adaptive reuse, according to a filing earlier today with the City of Los Angeles.

The property, located at the northwest corner of 8th Street and Towne Avenue, is currently improved a four-story, 76,000-square foot building that houses a variety of textile firms.  Owner Towne Plaza, LLC has proposed to convert the upper floors of the building into 60 live-work apartments, with an average floor area of 738 square feet.

The applicant has requested several ministerial approvals, including permission to build units as small as 410 square feet.

City records indicate that the building at 785 S. Towne Avenue was constructed between 1916 and 1917 for the Diamond Laundry Company.  It was designed with a concrete and steel frame by the architecture firm Train & Williams.

Additional details about the project currently unclear.
