Affordable housing debuts at 1500 E. Anaheim Street in Long Beach

An April 16 ceremony with Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson marked the completion of Wellspring, a new affordable and permanent supportive housing complex from Bridge Housing Corp. at the intersection of Anaheim Street and Walnut Avenue.

Located on a previously vacant site at 1500 E. Anaheim Street, the project consists of a five-story building that features 88 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with parking for 156 vehicles. The new housing is reserved for renters earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income level, including 20 apartments for formerly homeless seniors.

Residents of the apartments, which are nearly fully leased through a lottery and referrals from the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, have access to supportive services provided by Mental Health America Los Angeles and the YMCA of Greater Long Beach.

At street level, the building features an 18,000-square-foot community health center which is operated by TCC Family Health. The facility is scheduled to open later this year, and will provide pediatric and adult services, dental care, women's health services, acupuncture, behavioral health services, and a pharmacy. Abode Communities is designing the wellness center.

The Wellspring building was designed by SVA Architects, and includes amenities such as a rooftop deck, a central courtyard, and recreation rooms.

The project was funded by government entities including the City of Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Development Authority, the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, the Long Beach Community Investment Company, the California Department of Housing and Community Development Multifamily Housing Program, as well as U.S. Bank, Greystone Housing Impact Investors L.P., Century Housing, the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, and the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee. R.D. Olson served as general contractor.

Bridge Housing, based in San Francisco, is developing several affordable apartment communities in Los Angeles County, including new buildings at the Jordan Downs complex in Watts and the Vermont-Manchester complex in South Los Angeles.
