A document posted by the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council has unveiled renderings for the proposed expansion of Dignity Health's California Hospital Medical Center.

The project, located at 1401 S. Grand Avenue in the South Park neighborhood, is highlighted by the proposed construction of a four-story, 143,000-square-foot building that would contain the hospital's emergency department, NICU, antepartum, postpartum, and labor and delivery service, which would replace a surface parking lot fronting Hope Street.  Plans also call for the construction of a six-story, 749-car parking garage along Grand Avenue that would sit atop 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

The Devenney Group, a Phoenix, Arizona-based architecture firm, is designing the expansion project.  At completion, the hospital will have 345 patient beds, an increase 27 from its existing facility.

A full buildout of the proposed development will require the demolition of an approximately 52,000-square-foot medical office building, an admitting building, and some portions of a 1960s building.

The project is motivated in part by changing State-level regulations which require a retrofit or reconstruction of acute medical facilities before the year 2030.  Dignity will decommission its 1960s building for acute care and transfer services to the new construction to comply with these requirements.

Additionally, the project is intended to allow the hospital to reorganize its various departments for improved efficiency.
