Next month, the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council's Planning and Land Use Committee is scheduled to review a proposal to convert a 1950s office building in the Fashion District into a hotel.

The project, filed earlier this year with the Department of City Planning, calls for transforming the six-story Mart South building at 124 E. Olympic Boulevard into 149 hotel rooms with ground-floor and rooftop dining space.

KFA Architecture is designing the proposed development, which would bring a new color scheme to the nondescript mid-century structure.  In addition to hotel rooms and restaurant space, floor plans also indicate that the project would add a rooftop bar and swimming pool.

Ownership records link to project to an entity known as Mart South, LP, an affiliate of Jamison Services, Inc.  Jamison was previously the owner of the adjoining California Market Center, before selling a majority stake to Brookfield in 2017.

Recent years have seen several nearby historic structures transformed into hotels, with Broadway's Ace Hotel serving as a trailblazer.  Construction is currently underway for a Hoxton Hotel and a Proper Hotel just west of the Mart South property.

Live/Work Development Underway in Frogtown

A small live/work development is making slow-but-steady progress in Frogtown.

The project, located on Eads Street between Blake Avenue and the Los Angeles River, will consist of a four-story edifice featuring eight dwelling units above a street-level coffee shop.
