Earlier thise year, Kaiser Permanente filed plans with the City of Los Angeles to expand its Specialty Medical Center overlooking Chinatown.  New details have emerged for the project via an initial study published by the City of Los Angeles.

The approximately seven-acre property - located at the corner of Figueroa Terrace and College Street - is a special facility for mental health services.  In a two-phase expansion, Kaiser hopes to add nearly 240,000 square feet of medical facilities, a portion of which could open as early as 2021.

The initial phase of construction would consist of a four-story, 100,000-square-foot medical center and new parking structure for 655 vehicles.  It would rise at the north side of the property, towards Stadium Way, on what is now a surface parking lot.  Completion is anticipated in 2021.

Following the completion of the first phase, Kaiser proposes to build a 92,000-square-foot expansion of the existing inpatient mental health facility, replacing two smaller buildings.  The new construction would expand the total number of beds from 68 to 130 and add 105 parking stalls.  This component of the project would be built out over the course of 15 years, although an exact timeline has not been specified.

As with the proposed modernization of the Kaiser Sunset facility in East Hollywood, the project is being designed by architecture firm Perkins + Will.

Yesterday, the development team behind a proposed residential-retail development near The Grove gave a first look at their project to the Mid City West Community Council's Planning and Land Use Committee.

The project, filed earlier this year with the City of Los Angeles, calls for replacing an auto body repair shop and two small commercial buildings at 8000-8014 W.
