In this year's State of the City address, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti laid out a $20-million strategy to build temporary shelters for the city's ballooning homeless populations in all 15 of its Council Districts.  Motions introduced earlier today by Councilmembers Mitch O'Farrell, Paul Krekorian, and Curren Price indicate where are least three of these facilities could be located.

O'Farrell, who represents the 13th District that includes neighborhoods such as Hollywood and Silver Lake, has suggested a City-owned parking lot at 1533 Schrader Boulevard.  The 21,000-square-foot site, currently under the control of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, is located near the Hollywood YMCA, and just north of Sunset Boulevard.

Krekorian, whose 2nd District includes North Hollywood and Studio City, has identified potential sites located at 11220 Ventura Boulevard, 11231 Magnolia Boulevard, 12225 Ventura Boulevard, 11471 Chandler Boulevard, and 7600 Tyrone Avenue.  Three additional properties without designated addresses are located near the intersections of Sherman Way and Lankershim Boulevard and Burbank Boulevard and Clybourn Avenue.

9th District Councilmember Price, who represents portions of South Los Angeles, has suggested a City-owned site at 4800 S. Figueroa Street.  The 20,000-square-foot lot is currently under the jurisdiction of the Department of Recreation and Parks.

Each site will be evaluated to determine its suitability for the development of crisis or bridge housing.

The motions have each been referred to the Homeless and Poverty Committee for review.

The proposed shelters would be built in the mold of a similar facility now under construction at El Pueblo's Parking Lot 5, located across the street from Union Station in Downtown.  The parking lot will be improved with multiple trailers that will provide shelter and restroom facilities for up to 60 homeless persons.
