Three-and-a-half years after breaking ground, construction is complete for the centerpiece of Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana's expansion and modernization project.

An August 26 pre-opening event offered a first look at the Friese Family Tower, which stands just south of the US-101 Freeway to the east of Reseda Boulevard. The six-story, approximately 223,000-square-foot building adds 190 patient beds to the hospital campus. The new construction also provides an expanded emergency department and new imaging facilities.

Perkins&Will is designing the building, which stands approximately 120 feet in height, and connects to the hospital's Women's Pavilion through a landscaped garden at the ground-floor.

The project, which maintained its projected completion date of 2023 throughout the construction process, is set to begin serving its first patients on October 1.

The project, like many upcoming hospital renovations in Los Angeles, is the result of a requirement for acute care facilities in the state of California to either retrofit or replace their aging facilities due to earthquake safety. Cedars-Sinai, one of the partners in the Tarzana project, is already rebuilding and expanding its Marina del Rey hospital for the same reason, and has plans for similar upgrades at its main campus in Beverly Grove.
