In this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, architectural photographer Hunter Kerhart demonstrates the rapid pace of development in Downtown Los Angeles over the past three years.

Both of the below images were taken at the intersection of 8th Street and Grand Avenue in the Financial District, one of the most prominent examples of change in the central business district.

The before image, from April 2014, shows construction just beginning for Carmel Partners' 700-unit 8th & Grand development.  The Commercial Exchange building sits empty in the background, and two surface parking lots line 8th Street.

The follow-up picture, from June 2017, shows 8th & Grand in its complete four, with its ground floor activated by a Whole Foods Market.  Carmel Partners followed with the 33-story Atelier tower shortly afterwards, while a new parking garage with a CVS Pharmacy was built in the foreground.  At the back of the image, the Commercial Exchange Building has now been repurposed by the Sydell Group as the boutique hotel Freehand LA.
