Just southeast of Metro's Hollywood/Western Station, a handful of small residential buildings completed between 1916 and 1948 are slated for redevelopment with a larger multifamily apartment complex, according to an application submitted recently to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning.

The proposed project at 5416-5430 W. Carlton Way, which comes from applicant Leeor Maciborski, would replace 25 existing homes with a new eight-story, nearly 139,000-square-foot building featuring 131 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments above subterranean parking for 148 vehicles. Plans also call for retaining an existing two-story building with eight homes.

Requested approvals include density bonus incentives to allow a larger project than would normally be permitted by-right. In exchange, 14 of the new apartments are to be set aside as very low-income affordable housing.

Although plans were not uploaded to the project's case file, findings describe the building as having an "attractive design effect with an unbroken roof line without the use of gables, dormers, plant-ons, cutouts or other means."

The proposed development follows several new affordable housing developments now taking shape next to Hollywood/Western Station, including a ground-up nine-story building on Western Avenue and the adaptive reuse of the historic Hollywood Western Building.
