GPI Companies is forging ahead with a proposal to redevelop the Hollywood home of Amoeba Music with a high-rise tower, according to an initial study published by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning.

The controversial development, first hinted at one year ago, calls for the construction of a 28-story building at 6400 Sunset Boulevard that would feature 232 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments - including ten for very low income households - above 7,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial uses.

Johnson Fain is designing the contemporary glass tower, which features a rectangular form protruding above a parking garage.  Architectural diagrams contained within the initial study point to on-site amenities such as a fitness center, a game room, and a podium-level amenity deck with a swimming pool and garden areas.  A large rooftop observation area would cap the tower at approximatley 318 feet above street level.

Construction of the tower is expected to begin in mid-2019, should the City of Los Angeles approve the project.  The tower would be built out over approximately 24 months, with completion anticipated in 2021.

GPI, which purchased the site from Amoeba's parent company for $34 million, is one of several investors planning high-rise towers for this stretch of Sunset.  Directly across the street, R.D. Olson Development has proposed a 21-story Art Deco hotel on a property now inhabited by a Jack in the Box restaurant.

GPI is also part of the development team behind the mixed-use NoHo West development in the San Fernando Valley.
