A stretch of recently-demolished residential buildings in the Del Rey neighborhood could give way to a new apartment complex, according to a notice published by the City of Los Angeles.

The project site, now an empty lot at 4424-4438 S. Slauson Avenue, is being permitted for the construction of a new four-story building which would feature 34 apartments above a 49-car subterranean parking garage.

Category, the developer behind the proposed project, is using density bonus incentives to permit a larger structures than zoning rules would normally low. In exchange, three of the apartments are to be set aside for rent as affordable housing at the very low-income level.

Renderings of the project, described on the Category website as "Casa Culver," depict a contemporary low-rise structure with a brick facade.

The proposed project, which remains in the plan check stage, is one of a handful of new multifamily developments coming to this section of the Del Rey neighborhood, which abuts the Culver Boulevard greenway and bike trail. Mixed-use buildings have recently been completed on nearby sites to the west and east along Culver, and several apartment buildings have recently sprouted on Slauson.

Category, which is based in Los Angeles, has previously developed a 15-unit apartment complex near Ballona Creek in Del Rey, and also has new projects in the works for East Hollywood and Koreatown.
