A series of vacant buildings that once served as a group home in Long Beach could be razed and redeveloped with affordable housing, according to a notice recently issued by the city.

The property in question, located at 4151 East Fountain Street and 4220 Wehrle Court, is developed with three structures that once housed Bayfront Youth and Family Services, which served teenagers with severe behavioral or mental challenges. According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, the facility shuttered in 2015 following a state inspection which found problems with the operations of the program.

The property that remains, which spans approximately 62,000 square feet one block north of Anaheim Street, is now slated for redevelopment by Long Beach-based Linc Housing Corporation, one of the region's most prolific developers of subsidized low-income homes. The new project, named Fountain Street & Wehrle Court Family Housing, calls for the construction of new four- and three-story buildings featuring 73 apartments - including 72 affordable units and one apartment for an on-site property manager.

Long Beach officials have determined that the project will be exempted from further review under the California Environmental Quality Act.

The project site also sits a short distance south of a property at 3590 Pacific Coast Highway, where a similar affordable housing complex designed by architect Michael Maltzan is now under construction.

Linc Housing, in addition to its new Long Beach project, broke ground earlier this year on a 340-unit apartment complex which will be the largest affordable housing development in the City of Glendale when completed.
