Nonprofit developer Meta Housing Corporation has cleared a half-acre site near Metro's Expo/Western Station, signaling the start of construction for a new affordable housing complex.

The project, dubbed Metro @ Western, will span across a property bounded by 37th Street, 36th Place, and Western Avenue.  Plans call for a four-story building featuring 32 apartments set aside for households making between 30 and 50 percent of the Los Angeles area median income.  This includes 16 units targeted for currently homeless persons.

Per the California State Treasurer's office, the completed development will offer a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments priced between $488 and $1,354 per month.

The Architects Collective is designing the low-rise building, which is described as a "white canvas punctuated with randomized openings."  The project will also include a protected courtyard at the backside of the property.

Metro @ Western is budgeted at approximately $19.6 million.
