Harridge Development Group is approaching another milestone in its bid to construct a towering mixed-use complex around the Crossroads of the World in Hollywood, with the project set to go before the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.

The 1.4-million-square-foot development, which would span across four city blocks near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue, calls for the construction of 950 residential units - including 105 set aside for very-low-income households - in addition to 190,000 square feet of commercial uses and a 308-room hotel.  These new uses would replace a handful of existing apartment buildings and commercial structures.

Architecture firms SOM and Rios Clementi Hale Studios are designing the project, which was retooled earlier this year to allow for the preservation of the landmarked Hollywood Reporter Building on Sunset Boulevard.  The design change, which stripped away an earlier plan to realign Las Palmas Boulevard, resulted in a slight increase in the amount of planned construction and an increase in the number of proposed affordable units.

Renderings show a mix of mid-rise and high-rise structures which would stand as tall as 32 stories in height.  A central paseo would cut through the project site, offering a pedestrian connection between Selma Avenue in the north and Sunset in the south.

A staff report to the Planning Commission recommends approval for the Crossroads Hollywood development, which is to be built out over the course of 48 months.  However, a timeline for the project has not been announced.

The Crossroads project, as with many high-density developments in Hollywood, has been the subject of much pushback.  In addition to the Hollywood Reporter Building, which was granted landmark status after Harridge had already announced its plans, unsuccessful attempts have been made to designate other buildings that are slated for demolition.
