Since our last check-in five months ago, the wood frame of Essex Hollywood has nearly topped out at 6240 Sunset Boulevard.

Essex Property Trust is developing the $54-million project, which is replacing a surface parking lot next to the historic Earl Carroll Theatre. The seven-story building will contain 200 rental apartments above 4,700 square feet of ground floor retail space and two levels of subterranean parking. Amenities will include a fitness center, a sky deck, and a swimming pool.

TCA Architects is designing the contemporary podium-type building, along with MJS Landscape Architecture. HED Architects was also involved with the concept and entitlement process. The project will include a pedestrian paseo between Sunset Boulevard and Leland Avenue, providing access to the adjacent theatre, which was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2016.

Essex Hollywood was previously slated to open in late 2019.

Immediately east of the Earl Carroll Theatre, Hanover Company has plans to replace a strip retail center with a similar seven-story multifamily residential project.
