Construction is now in progress for a new academic building on the northern perimeter of Cal State University Dominguez Hills.

The Innovation and Instruction Building, now rising just west of the intersection of Victoria Street and Birch Knoll Drive, will stand four stories in height.  The approximately 106,600-square-foot structure, described as a gateway for the campus, replaces a cluster of one-story buildings dating to the early 1970s.

The steel-frame building will house general university and business school classrooms, faculty offices, an event center, and a cafe, according to the website of its general contractor, C.W. Driver.

The project is being designed by architecture firm HGA, according to signs posted to the construction site.  Renderings depict a contemporary low-rise accented by black and yellow panels.

Completion is expected in time for the Fall 2021 semester, according to the university.

The project follows the university's 91,000-square-foot Science and Innovation Building, which opened last year near the center of the campus.

The university, which is located in northern Carson, recently adopted a new campus master plan which can accommodate approximately 1,000 beds of student housing, over 2,100 market rate apartments, 100,000 square feet of retail, and 720,000 square feet of office space.  Plans call for the school to nearly double its number of full-time equivalent students from 11,000 to 20,000 by the year 2035.
