Kaiser Permanente, which has spent recent years building up its Southern California presence, is planning an expansion of its West Los Angeles Medical Center campus.

Yesterday, Kaiser submitted an application to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning to build a new surgery center and medical office building on a 2.3-acre property at 5901 W. Venice Boulevard. The property at the northwest corner of Venice and Fairfax Avenue, currently improved with a smaller medical office facility, is slated for the construction of a new 63,000-square-foot building which would be accompanied by a new 300-car garage.

“We are very excited to expand our ability to serve the Greater Los Angeles community,” said Kaiser senior vice president Lilit Zibari in a news release. “This new Venice Boulevard medical office building will augment our existing medical center by broadening the range of available outpatient surgical services and help us address an increase in the need for this care.”

The new facility is intended as an outpatient facility, where patients would receive treatment and undergo procedures without overnight stays. In addition to being more cost-effective than a full trip to the hospital, the outpatient center is also billed as an opportunity to open up capacity at other Kaiser facilities.

Renderings of the project show a contemporary three-story building, which would be designed to LEED Gold standards and include perimeter landscaping and setbacks from neighboring residential properties.

Kaiser expects to start work at 5901 Venice in 2025, pending city approvals.

Based in Oakland, Kaiser Permanente employs more than 8,000 physicians in Southern California. The non-profit provider has already initiated plans for an expansion of its flagship hospital campus near on Sunset Boulevard in East Hollywood, and opened its own medical school in Pasadena in 2020.
