A mid-rise development featuring condominiums and ground-floor retail space is scheduled to open next summer in Little Tokyo, according to developer ETCO Homes.

The project, named Āto, replaced a surface parking lot across the street from the Weller Court shopping center.  Plans call 77 one- and two-bedroom condominiums - ranging from approximately 700 square feet to 1,117 square feet - atop ground-floor stores and restaurants.

Designed by Bucilla Group Architecture, the building will rise to a ninth-story penthouse deck, standing approximately 120 feet above ground level.  A 6,000-square-foot amenity deck will span its roof level, featuring a pool, a hot tub, a barbeque area, and a gym.

ETCO is scheduled to launch its sales effort for the project in late 2020.

The development site is located along Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Street, formerly known as Weller Court, which was renamed in honor of the first Japanese-America to reach outer space following his death in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

Āto is one of the few new condo developments built in Little Tokyo, which has seen construction of several large apartment blocks along 2nd Street, but little in the way of for-sale housing.
