Five months after we last checked in, the blue tower crane is gone from intersection of Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, Little Tokyo Service Center is building a mixed-use affordable housing complex above the subway station of the same name.
The new six-story building, which wraps around the distinctive entrance to Vermont/Santa Monica Station, will feature 187 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units above ground-floor commercial space when completed. Those apartments are split into 94 units of permanent supportive housing and 91 units of affordable housing priced for very low-income households, with the remaining two apartments set aside for on-site managers.

Koning Eizenberg is designing the podium-type building, which will be accompanied by a renovation of the more than 20-year-old plaza which surrounds the station entrance. New features to be added include a mobility hub and improved transit shelters. Additionally, a health center and a food court within the apartment building's ground floor commercial space is intended to activate the plaza.
At the time of its groundbreaking, the more than $118 million project was on track for completion in the second quarter of 2024.

The new project is one of a handful of large, mixed-use buildings now planned or under construction near Vermont/Santa Monica Station, including an 85-unit building which began work earlier this year next door and a 177-unit complex now underway one block to the east.
LTSC, in addition to its East Hollywood project, is active on its home turf. The non-profit developer broke ground this year on another affordable and supportive housing developments at the former home of the Umeya Rice Cake Company, and has plans for a project next to the Japanese American National Museum.
