Eight years after purchasing the Providence Tarzana Medical Center, nonprofit service provider Providence Health & Systems has filed plans with the City of Los Angeles to begin capital improvements at the 245-bed hospital.

According to a case filing from the Department of City Planning, the Renton, Washington-based company is planning to add a new patient wing and parking garage to the 43-year-old facility, which is located just south of the Ventura Freeway.  Also included in the proposal is an expansion of the facility's diagnostic and treatment areas, complete with a new central utility plant.

The proposed development would be contingent on a series of discretionary approvals from the city, including a specific plan amendment, a vesting zone change and a conditional use permit.

A timeline and budget for the project is currently unclear.

The hospital is located approximately a quarter-mile northwest of the Ventana Medical Plaza, a $50-million medical office building now nearing completion on Ventura Boulevard.
