At its meeting next week, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission will consider a proposal from a West L.A. based firm to construct a mixed-use complex just northwest of Cal State Northridge.

The project, which would span across a 1.5-acre property at 9530-9546 N. Reseda Boulevard, calls for demolishing an existing post office and surface parking lot to make way for a four-story, 127,000-square-foot building that would feature 128 units of student housing, 5,725 square feet of street-level retail, and underground parking for 240 vehicles and 157 bicycles.  Plans also call for open space and outdoor amenities, including a paseo, a roof deck, a courtyard swimming pool and multiple fitness rooms.

Freshly-rebranded architecture firm Steinberg Hart is designing the low-rise complex, which is depicted with a U-shaped form atop a one-story podium.  Proposed building materials would include glass, plaster, perforated metal screens and concrete.

The Planning Department's staff report recommends that the Commission grant approval to the proposed development, which will necessitate several discretionary actions including a zone change and a height district change.

The project at 9530-9546 Reseda comes from Symphony Development, whose portfolio also includes student apartments near USC and Southwestern Law School.

Other large projects on and around the Cal State Northridge campus include a proposed Hyatt Place hotel and a 146-unit apartment complex.  In the more distant future, the school also may be served by a new east-west bus rapid transit line, potentially routed along Nordhoff Street.

LA Sanitation and Goodwill Could Redevelop Properties in Lincoln Heights

It could potentially feature affordable housing.

L.A. City's Sanitation Department could team up with the non-profit organization Goodwill Southern California to redevelop a series of contiguous properties in Lincoln Heights.

The proposed, introduced as a motion last week by 1st District Councilmember Gil Cedillo, would involve a LASAN-owned property at 303 N. San Fernando Road and Goodwill's headquarters across the street at 342 N. San Fernando Road.
