Meta Housing Corp. has broken ground on a new affordable housing development in Carson, intended to cater to artists.

The project, called the Carson Arts Colony, will consist of a three-story building at 21205 Main Street, featuring 46 apartments catering to artists and their families.  Plans call for a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans, as well as open spaces such as a picnic area, a container garden, a gym, a courtyard, a children's play area, and community room.  Other planned amenities include on-site workspaces and an art gallery that will showcase the work of Arts Colony.

The three-building property will cater to households making between 30 and 45 percent of the area median income, with rents ranging from $386 for a one-bedroom unit to as high as $1,406 for a three-bedroom unit.

Y&M Architects, which frequently works with Meta Housing, is designing the Carson Arts Colony.

The project team also includes Western Community Housing, Inc., EngAGE, and WSh Management.

Elsewhere in Carson, developer Thomas Safran & Associates broke ground earlier this year on a veterans affordable housing complex on Figueroa Street.
