Five months after holding a ceremonial groundbreaking, the first signs of vertical construction are now visible at the new home of OCMA at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
The project, located near the intersection of Anton Boulevard and Avenue of the Arts, will consist of a 25,000-square-foot campus featuring a galleries, multipurpose space, and a rooftop sculpture terrace with room for events of up to 1,000 attendees. Ancillary features include a gift shop, administrative offices, and a cafe.
The approximately $73-million project expands OCMA's square footage by approximately 50 percent when compared to the museum's former home.
The Morphosis-designed facility will also include a large lobby and atrium illuminated by windows overlooking the building's roof terrace.
Completion is anticipated in 2021.
During the course of construction, OCMA is operating out of a property at 1661 W. Sunflower Avenue in Santa Ana.
Last year, Morphosis was also announced as the new designer of the Korean American National Museum in Los Angeles.
