After nearly five years of waiting, the effort to transform a vacant lot in East Hollywood into public green space is finally back in motion.

The proposed Madison Avenue Park, slated for a vacant half-acre lot at 1175 N. Madison Avenue, has been on the drawing boards since 2011, when the City of Los Angeles purchased the underlying property for $1.6 million.

According to the website of the Trust for Public Land (TPL), the pocket park will be split into two components.  The front half of the lot, fronting Madison Avenue, will become recreation space with a children's playground, a junior-sized basektball court, fitness equipment, outdoor seating, shade structures, walking paths and grass.  The back end of the property will become a community garden, under the stewardship of the Los Angeles Community Garden Council.

A case filing from the Los Angeles Department of City Planning indicates that the project may also include an educational building and three on-site parking spaces.

TPL is currently in the midst of community outreach for the park.  An exact timeline is currently unclear.

The project is being funded in part by an approximately $2.2-million grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

Irvine-based developer Calcagnie Group has plans for another small lot subdivision in Northeast Los Angeles, this time on the border between Eagle Rock and Highland Park.

The latest project, located at 6845-6855 N. Figueroa Street, would replace three existing houses with eight new residences.
