At its meeting next week, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission is scheduled to review plans to convert a 109-year-old Arts District building into a boutique hotel.

The project, which first emerged in 2016, calls for a three-story brick warehouse at 400 S. Alameda Street to be converted into 66 hotel rooms, in addition to features such as retail space, a screening room and a fitness center.  The development would also include the construction of a new fourth floor atop the low-rise structure, restoring it to its original height.

Grupo Habita, a Mexican chain of boutique hotels, would operate the establishment.

San Diego-based Gracia Studio is designing the project, which would retain the building's original brick work and wood interior.

An initial study published in May laid out an ambitious 18-week construction timeline for the the hotel.

The Los Angeles Department of City Planning's staff report recommends that the commission sign off of the project and reject an appeal from a nearby resident, which cites a lack of a full environmental impact report.
