A document submitted last month to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors offers a first look at the proposed mixed-use development which would serve as the new home of the Florence Library.
The project, which is being undertaken by AMCAL Multi-Housing, calls for razing the current library and an adjacent commercial structure, which span across a one-acre site at 1600-1616 E. Florence Avenue. Afterwards, plans call for the construction of a five-story building on the property, featuring 116 units of senior affordable housing. The library would be relocated into a 10,000-square-foot space within the building's ground floor.
Plans call for a mixture of one- and two-bedroom dwellings, set aside for persons at the low and very-low income levels. The project would also include 98 parking spaces for use by residents and library patrons, as well as amenities such as a a courtyard, a fitness center and a community room.
VTBS Architects is designing the podium-type building, which would be clad with materials including two-tone thin brick, plaster, fiber cement plank siding and aluminum.
A budget and timeline have not been announced for the project, which would rise one block west of the Blue Line's Florence Station.
A similar senior affordable housing complex is also taking shape near Willowbrook Station.
