Construction is complete for a new permanent supportive housing complex for seniors in Sherman Oaks, TCA Architects has announced.

The project, built by Mercy Housing California at 14534 Burbank Boulevard, consists of a four-story building featuring 55 apartments reserved for formerly homeless renters aged 55 years and up. All residents of the buildings are required to undergo a screening process to verify their eligibility for the building, which may include previously living in a shelter, in a transitional program, or on the street.

“Senior citizens are among the most vulnerable in the homeless population,” said TCA Architects studio director Armine Movsesyan in a news release. “Sadly, they’re also the fastest growing segment, with the number of homeless seniors rising by 22 percent last year despite the overall drop in homeless populations within L.A. County."

The contemporary low-rise building was designed with a mix of studio and one-bedroom units which will cater to single occupants, each featuring a kitchen and a bathroom. Those units will have access to common amenities and laundry facilities, as well as close proximity to markets, a pharmacy, a bank, and restaurants.

On-site programs offered to residents will include art, cooking, yoga, and financial literacy courses. Up to three case managers will be on-site to help with medication compliance and provide referrals for outside care.

Construction for the project commenced in 2021, and move-ins began in October 2023.

Mercy Housing's other recent L.A. projects include supportive housing in Downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights.
