The Metro @ Buckingham Apartments, which will rise from a long-vacant site at 4018-4030 Buckingham Road, calls for the construction of a four-story building featuring 102 one-bedroom apartments reserved for seniors aged 62 and older earning between 35 and 60 percent of the Los Angeles area median income. Plans also call for a central lawn, a community room, a fitness center, on-site supportive services, and 60 at-grade parking spaces.
Rents will be set between $507 and $1,014 per month, according to a staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee. Half of the units will be reserved for formerly homeless seniors and those with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities.
The four-story building is being designed by The Architects Collective. According to the Inglewood-based firm's website, the design of the Metro @ Buckingham is shaped by the irregular project site and zoning restrictions which mandate a 50-foot building height at the property line.
The $38.5-million project is the second phase of a senior affordable complex, which shares a block with an outpatient medical facility recently completed by Kaiser Permanente. Both are located just east of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, which is slated for redevelopment as the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line heads toward completion.
