The project, called Westhaven, is slated for a narrow lot at 11609 S. Western Avenue. San Diego-based development firm Affirmed Housing Group is has proposed the construction of a five-story building which would contain 57 low-income apartments reserved for formerly homeless persons above parking for 34 vehicles.
The design by TSM is described as being of a contemporary architectural style, "with the concept of a sliding building mass, and articulated with varied joints and rhythms across the building façade."
Westhaven is already partially funded via a $5.75-million loan approved earlier this year by Los Angeles County.
The development site is included in a roughly 658-acre district - encompassing portions of Westmont and Athens - which was rezoned earlier this year by Los Angeles County to incentivize the construction of new housing along major transit corridors. Under the plan, called Connecting Southwest L.A., much of the proposed growth would be centered on the intersection of Western and Imperial Highway - across the street from Los Angeles Southwest College.
A similar project is already under construction in the recently-rezoned area. Westmont Vistas, a 39-unit low-income housing development from Abode Communities, is nearing completion a short distance north on Imperial Highway.
