An LADOT parking lot located between Century City and the 405 Freeway may be the latest City-owned property to be used as temporary homeless housing, according to a motion introduced yesterday by 5th District Councilmember Paul Koretz.

The approximately 10,500-square-foot site, known as Lot 748, is located at 11050 Santa Monica Boulevard.  Koretz's motion calls on multiple city departments to evaluate the property and report on its potential as either affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, or temporary shelter.

In a related action, City Council President Herb Wesson has identified another LADOT parking lot in Koreatown that could serve a temporary shelter.  Parking lot 691, located at 682 S. Vermont Avenue, offers approximately 24,600 square feet of available space.

The motions from both Wesson and Koretz have been referred to the Council's Homelessness and Poverty Committee.

Temporary shelters at these sites would likely be similar in form and function to one recently approved at El Pueblo's Parking Lot 5.  That facility, which is expected to be operational by this summer, will consist of a series of trailers providing shelter and supportive services for up to 60 persons.

In his State of the City address last month, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called for similar facilities in each council district as part of a $20-million effort to combat the City's ballooning homeless population.

Councilmembers Mitch O'Farrell, Curren Price, and Paul Krekorian have already identified potential shelter sites in their districts, which include Hollywood, South Los Angeles, and the San Fernando Valley respectively.

Mixed-Use Development Planned Near Laguna Niguel Metrolink Station

The Laguna Niguel Planning Commission has approved a mixed-use development near the city's Metrolink Station.  The joint venture between Blackwood Real Estate and Walbern, located near the intersection of Crown Valley Parkway and Forbes Road, will consist of 100 two- and three-bedroom apartments in a seven-story building.  Plans also call for 2,700 square feet of ground-floor retail space, as well as a pool courtyard, a fitness center, a private garden, and a sky deck.
