A $10 million gift from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation will help bring a new home for USC's women's soccer and lacrosse programs to reality, the university announced this week.

Rawlinson Stadium, named for the family of Los Angeles-area philanthropist Joseph Rawlinson, is set to begin construction later this year as an expansion of Soni McAlister Field, where the soccer and lacrosse teams already play. The $38-million project at 3000 S. Hoover Street will include a natural grass field and seating capacity for up to 2,500 spectators, as well as viewing decks, a press box, a box office, concession stands, and an entry plaza.

“Rawlinson Stadium will be the place for the Women of Troy to dazzle us with their athletic prowess even more,” said USC president Carol L. Folt in a news release. “I love making this announcement during a milestone year: the 50th anniversary of Title IX. USC’s commitment to women in sports is stronger than ever.”

Non public-facing features of Rawlinson Stadium are to include new, dedicated locker rooms for both the soccer and lacrosse teams, in addition to team meeting rooms, a sports medicine space, a nutrition fueling bar, and meeting space for coaches. Plans also call for an LED video board overlooking the field, as well as an audio system and stadium lights.

The existing Soni McAlister Field has been open since 1998, and has capacity approximately 1,000 spectators. In the time that it has been open, USC women’s soccer has won two national championships, while the women’s lacrosse team has been to five NCAA tournaments.

Rawlinson Stadium, which is set to break ground this year and open for play by 2025, will rise across Hoover Street from the $700-million USC Village complex.
