The tarp is down at the Arts District's Walnut Growers Building, and the windows are back in.

The eight-story building, located at the northwest corner of 7th and Mill Streets, is being converted into an unspecified number of live/work apartments by the Los Angeles-based Hillcrest Company.  The early 1920s buildings, originally built as the headquarters of the California Walnut Growers Association, was previously entitled for adaptive reuse by Linear City.

Building permits point to 57 apartments and 6,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space in the finished product.

Hillcrest also owns a parking lot across the street at 7th and Decatur Streets, which is being entitled for the construction of a mixed-use development 122 apartments and 9,500 square feet of ground-level commercial uses.
