A 1960s industrial facility in Gardena has been razed to dirt, and a gated townhome community is slated to rise in its place.

The approximately five-acre site, located at 1515 178th Street, sits midway between Western and Normandie Avenues.  Irvine-based Melia Homes has proposed the construction of 114 townhomes on the site, located in 22 different buildings connected by a network of private streets and green spaces.

The development, which is named One Seven Eight, would consist of three-story buildings ranging between 1,528 and 1,801 square feet in size.  Plans call for a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom floor plans.

A project website points to an opening date in 2021.

The City of Gardena has approved two similar townhome developments from G3 Urban and KB Home on Rosecrans Avenue.
