Nearly two years into construction, the wood frame of the La Plaza Village development is now rising just east of Union Station.

The project, which is being built by Trammell Crow Company on two Los Angeles County-owned parking lots at the intersection of North Broadway and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, will feature 355 rental apartments and 43,000 square feet of street-level retail and restaurant space.  Of the mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units, 20 percent will be set aside as affordable housing.

Johnson Fain designed the two-building project, which will have buildings of five- and eight stories in height.  Renderings show a series of terrace roof decks, complementing interior amenities such as a fitness center.

SWA Group is serving as the project's landscape architect.  Their scope of work includes a new paseo that will run through the center of the two properties, connecting Union Station to the Fort Moore Memorial on Hill Street.

Plans were recently announced for a 26-story hotel and apartment tower across Cesar Chavez.
