Nearly two years after beginning construction at Wilshire Boulevard and Coronado Streets, Somerset Group has started work on the wood frame of the Zinc Apartments.

The seven-story building, which replaced a parking lot at 2525 Wilshire Boulevard, will consist of 152 apartments above 7,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and an underground parking structure.  Plans call for a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units, in addition to amenities such as a swimming pool, a fitness center and a roof deck.

DFH Architects is designing the podium-type building, taking over from an earlier proposal for a high-rise structure from Rios Clementi Hale.

Originally scheduled for completion in 2017, a current timeline for the project west of MacArthur Park is currently unknown.
