Long-delayed plans for a mixed-use development near Metro's Expo/Crenshaw Station have taken another turn.

Yesterday, plans were filed for the City of Los Angeles to construct a mixed-use building at 3670 Crenshaw Boulevard featuring 573 residential units, as well as grocery, retail, and restaurant uses.

The approximately 6.5-acre property is currently owned by the West Hollywood-based development firm Charles Company, which has been pursuing a project known as District Square ate the currently vacant site since 2011.  Although the project was originally envisioned at a 300,000-square-foot shopping center, Charles Company indicated its intention to add as many as 200 residential units to the property last year.

It is unclear how recent legal troubles for Charles Company - namely the arrest of one of its co-founders on charges of bribing a Los Angeles County employee - will affect plans for the Crenshaw Boulevard site.

Charles Company has also proposed similar mixed-use centers in West Hollywood and Hawthorne.

Other ongoing projects near Expo/Crenshaw Station include a proposed joint development at County- and Metro-owned properties just north of the District Square site, which would include 492 residential units and 47,500 square feet of retail space.
