Protective tarps now wrap much of The Breakers, a nearly century-old in Downtown Long Beach which is being converted back to its original use: a hotel.  

The 14-story building, located at 210 E. Ocean Boulevard, ranks among the oldest buildings in Long Beach.  Designed by Walken and Eisen, the Spanish Renaissance Revival building opened in 1926 as a luxury oceanfront resort.  Most recently, it functioned as a 233-unit congregate care facility.

Long Beach-based investment firm Pacific6 purchased the mid-rise tower in early 2018, and has since obtained entitlements for a $100-million development that will restore the Breakers as a boutique hotel, according to AEI Consultants.  The project, which is being designed by Nadel Architects, will include 185 guest rooms, a rooftop pool, and multiple food-and-beverage venues - including a renovation of the iconic Sky Room.

Completion is anticipated in 2021.

Pacific6 has also purchased the neighboring Ocean Center, a 14-story building which also dates to the 1920s, and plans to convert the former office tower into apartments.

“We hope that every resident of Long Beach will be proud of this project,” said Pacific6 partner John Molina in a statement. “It has been truly a passion play for Pacific6 and is a love letter to Long Beach. At its core, you can’t redo Downtown Long Beach—and Long Beach can’t become a more substantial city—without restoring those two buildings.”

The hotel site abuts the site of a 112-unit apartment complex now under construction at 207 Seaside Way, as well as an eye-catching pedestrian bridge which connects to the Long Beach Convention Center.
